Question Japanese Characters (And Keyboard - Image) - 10-11-2009, 07:44 PM

Can anyone tell me how many characters are there in the Japanese language?
And how easy is it to learn a kid the Japanese characters? Isn't it difficult?

By the way...
What about that Japanese keyboard??

I think it's 46 hiragana, 46 katakana, and 2000 to 3000 regular use kanji.

The sooner the kid starts the better.

And Japanese people use the same keyboard you are using now....

I may need to have an in-depth look over this writing system.

Well it's not like learning a language is a piece of cake!

FYI, Japanese and Chinese are likely the two most difficult-to-learn writing systems in the world. Korean is trivial (easier than English!), Vietnamese uses roman characters, Arabic is hard but nowhere near like Japanese, Russian and Greek are easy, etc.

Devanagari is sort-of tough as well.

I've always wondered how Chinese keyboards work. Japanese ones are pretty self explanatory, but Chinese seems like it would be impossible. Might make more sense if I knew anything at all about the Chinese language though...

I type Chinese just fine on my Mac's regular keyboard. There are many different input methods, but I prefer the pinyin input, in which I basically do something very similar to the Japanese input most people use.

For example, for 我叫葛佑神 I just type "wo" and hit spacebar to cycle through, "jiao," "ge," "you," and finally "shen." This is "My name is Ge You-Shen."

Do you know that the shape of most of the Arabic letters differ from one place to another in the word. I mean that the shape of the letter in the beginning of the word differs from the shape of the same letter if it comes in the middle or end of the word! Yo can find this, also, in the hebrew language.

And do you know that the Printed hebrow letters differs from the Handwritten letters! For Example if you want to print the "A" letter it will appear like this character "X" and if you are to write it by hand it will appear like "K".

That is it.
