English Saying translation?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows if there's an equivelent for the saying "you don't know what you've got until it's gone" in Japanese?

Couldn't think of an equivelent that is regarded as a saying but we do often use the following phrases to mean something similar:

失って初めて気づくものがある。
失って初めて分かるものがある。

In either phrase, you can replace 失って by 失くして.

So something like "there's understanding in losing something for the first time" in English?

Thanks!

Literally, it's more like "There are things that you notice (or understand) for the first time when you have lost them."
