japanese cinema

so..i actually havent had that much of a contact with japanese cinema..more like chinese. only one ive seen would be Letters from Iwo Jima, and that one was directed by Clint Eastwood.
so..i would like some suggestions. i know there was a popular samurai movie director with lots of good movies but for love of it i cant remember his name - well back in 80's..mby 70's was his best times? seen a lot of posters of samurai with moustache from black n white movies...
maybe you even know some sites were these movie buffs come together.
thanks.

Akira Kurosawa would be a good director to google his movies....

As with most recommendations, it depends on what genres you like. If it's only samurai movies or if you like horror, drama, comedy.

I like Audition, Linda Linda Linda, Densha Otoko, Departures, A Boy and his Samurai, Shodo Girls, Dark Water, Hula Girls, Nana, Battle Royale.... and others...

I'm sure there are a few threads here about cinema: just do a search. :-) This may be a good start: http://www.japanforum.com/forum/japa...tml#post769923
