J pop and J rock just plainly すごい!!

gobbledegook 10-14-2009 08:09 PM

For me, the first time I listened to it was probably from my cousin who was a Mai Kuraki fan. Since then, I've grown to love ayaka + kobukuro too. Still not quite a fan of J-Rock, probably pop rock is as far as I'd go for now.

Though i dont think a poll was warranted i love Japanese music for what it is...... good music. Just how i have my favorite US bands and i have my favorite Japanese artiest as well. Even if you cant understand it you can enjoy it and try to feel what the artiest is trying to say. There is nothing wrong with liking music from a different culture. People who make fun of it are just being ignorant. I believe music should be universal it has the ability to bridge divides.

Matenrou Opera : it started back from last year. i was a money waster ( cant spell) back then and i was at this japanese mag stoer. i random ly bought a mag. and i was just flipping throught it and i saw Sono ( vocal from m.o.) and i was thinkin he was the most beutiful man ive ever seen and i started listening to their music. they are always going to be on my top spot.

Versailles: its sad cause i just foundb out about them after Jasmine died T_T. my friend made me listen to their music and i find the Hizaki and Teru so cute and i personally love the guitar so i started to love thei rmusic/

Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois i was interested in Mana Sama more then their music but its still good music. I find Mana mysteriuos. Im interested in his background story about why he never smiles or talks in public.

D Asagi was my fave there and his vioce is very nice. His hair was the first thing that caught my attention. i just have this thing on long shiny pretty hair people. i loved his long hair and his eyes... i mean "eye". The thing that made me keep loving him is his look. i want to knwo what he always have one eye covered. im just interested in the story behind all these things.

I think...can't really remember but the first Japanese song I really listened to was Honey by L'arc en Ciel. I liked the beat didn't understand a word. And then I became curious about all these other bands JF raved about....And my favourite beat or rather song is Jibun Kakumei by Miyavi. My son thinks its an annoying song...seeing that listen to it over and over and over. I think I may wear it out...lol.

futurebeast 11-24-2009 05:24 PM

Japanese music is well produced, creative, eclectic, wholesome most of the time as well as usually peaceful. That is why I like it.

Leon 11-24-2009 06:51 PM

Well, if they ask me what I listen to, I just tell 'em and they pretty much find it weird :p
Currently I'm listening to Flavor of Life and Kimi ga Iru kara, beautiful songs :D

magicalgirlj 11-29-2009 04:56 PM

it's so much better than A pop, I mean we have Hannah Montana and Camp Rock:mad:

lself 12-01-2009 04:27 AM

I probably answered this already..but I love it because...It just feels right. It feels like exactly my type of music... I was for a while ONLY interested in jrock/visual kei...but now I'm kind of expanding my tastes again.

Still, I think it will always be special for me. And my top favorite band and solo artist are heidi. and Miyavi respectively. So I guess I'm still pretty crazy about it.

It's different..I feel like visual kei has a style all its own, and it was exactly right for me at that time. There's nothing like it really in American music for instance, so maybe that's also why I was drawn to it so much.

I originally started listening to Japanese music in 2005. A friend of mine at the time let me listen to Gackt, Hyde, and Miyavi and I was hooked. I found the other bands I like through research. 90% of the music I've listened to since then has been Japanese, but I also listen to Korean and Chinese music now as well. The Japanese bands I listen to the most are L'Arc~en~Ciel, D'espairs Ray, Dio-Distraught Overlord, 12012, Baiser, Exist Trace, Aikaryu, BLOOD, Ayabie, Calmando Qual, The Candy Spooky Theater, Duel Jewel, Mix Speakers Inc, Due le Quartz, Malice Mizer, Moi Dix Mois, Lareine, GPKISM, Schwarz Stein, Inugami Circus Dan, Janne Da Arc, Acid Black Cherry, Kagrra, MUCC, KuRt, LM.C, Phantasmagoria, Psycho le Cemu, Sadie, Shelly Trip Realize, Versailles, and UnsraW. The full list of what I listen to is on my myspace if you guys have one and want to add me: MySpace - www.myspace.com/17809032

I found all of the bands I listen to on my own except for the first few. And I got hooked because none of it sounds anything like the American music I was listening to at the time (stuff like Evanescence, Kittie, Jack Off Jill, Otep) and there are some truly incredible voices in the Japanese music scene. And the Japanese language is just incredible and beautiful to listen to. I very rarely listen to non-Asian music and haven't for nearly 5 years :P so I'm a little behind on the music in my own country.

thcuteness 12-02-2009 03:39 PM

I feel that there no reason to be ashamed about listening to not just japanese but also korean music as well. There nothing wrong with it even if i dont understand any of the lyrics (i dont speak japanese or korean lol).

The first part was was 'Why listen to Japanese music?' - I've no idea what 'kakkoi' is, but I know the last part 'mitai' was 'want to see'. Although I agree in the English parts of the forum people should kind of explain in English what they mean, not speak exclusively in Japanese :S It does seem like showing off and not fair.

Mayakashi 01-24-2010 04:41 PM

i first got into Jrock in mid October of 2008...so basically, a year and 3 months ago ^^
One of my friends on myspace posted a bulletin with a video in it. I checked it out, and it was Cassis, by the GazettE. I thought it was a lovely song, and i checked out more of their music. They are still my favorite alongside X Japan, hide, D'espairsRay, Alice Nine, Dir en grey, An Cafe, LM.C...and a lot more ^^
Pretty much everyone I go to school with knows I love Jrock, even if we aren't friends because i have pictures plastered on my folders/binders :P

RaimiiChan 01-24-2010 07:15 PM

I found out about japanese music because i the found a Yuko Ogurasong "Vitamin Love" in a related videos and i feel in love with the song. Then i started searching japanese music and thats how i found out about my favorite group C-ute. Before all this however i was already obsessed with everything japanese and learning japanese which explains why it was in the related videos x]

KyyO 01-24-2010 07:19 PM

I started listening to japanese/korean music about two years ago, but had been exposed to it years previous by friends and family. Dir En Grey was my first japanese band that I really got interested in and from there I was introduced to the other visual kei bands. I also grew up with uncles that were into Anime & asian movies, so since I was young I had been exposed to the culture but had not really taken a deep interest until a couple of years ago. The music always puts me in good mood and it's also unique from american music in some aspects. I listen to all kinds of music from punk, electronica, rap, hip-hop, techno, trance, pop, etc. But for some reason when these genres are in japanese or korean, they give me a satisfying feeling I can't explain. I also went to a concert here in the U.S. and got to see D'espairs Ray and MUCC play at Rockstar Taste of Chaos, they were truly amazing.

Tsuruneru 01-24-2010 07:50 PM

I listen to j-rock 100% almost nothing else (almost) My friends are ok with it two out of three do as well. When i tell people i listen to Japanese music they just think its fascinating how i listen to music outside of my own country. The only thing that annoys me is how people only get into a Japanese band only because they herd it from some anime or because how they like the singer and wants to marry them, thats how most people in this town see fans of Japanese music so when I'm listening to a band others think hey yeah that must be the song from naruto (and they pronounce it wrong) Or ベルトパンチ with there song crawl. I tell them this band has nothing to do with naruto or ベルトパンチ let alone anime. Listen to bands that have nothing to do with anime like ストレイテナー,椿屋四重奏,Sunsgrind,When the leaf seared, acidman, fact, northern19, and many more. They are really great and should be appreciated more than a one time song from an anime. But back in 2003 i didn't have an interest in any us bands, they just seemed boring so i didn't listen to music for a while. But then i found a channel on TV that had a show pop-japan TV witch had a lot of bands and thats where i found L'arc en ciel talking about there music and there lives, then i found another show called bento beat box thats where i found nami tamaki, asian kung fu generation, TM Revolution, and Guitar wolf, They were all great and was a start in my quest for awesome music. As time passed i looked up the bands i kept only finding one song from each one like Laruku's ready steady go, Akfg's haruka kanata, and so on. It was really annoying so i did the next best thing and bought Cd's and DVDs of them and bands that they were close friends with, soon after my list of favorite bands grew every day so i may know or at least heard of almost all jrock bands. Whats funny is that i only know about three to eight us bands and people go crazy when i tell them I've never heard of like the most popular us singer's or musicians.

SoniaAlexandra 01-24-2010 08:43 PM

well the japanese music I hear are the opening and ending themes from the animes...
and i love it!

Blitzwing85 04-01-2010 10:13 AM

I have only just started to get into Japanese music this week.
I have loved Japanese culture and history my whole life but for some reason it's took me until now (almost 25 years old) to really find out a lot more about it.

I started learning the language and i asked on a different website for peoples favorite artists from Japan. I'm busy filtering through about 50 that were mentioned and so far liking more than half. Some of them being:

Miyavi
MUCC
Buck-Tick
Nujabes
DJ Krush
Sex machineguns
Guniw Tools
Char

But, my music taste before the introduction of Japanese music was very varied. Favorite bands being the likes of Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Pink Floyd, The Cure, The Prodigy, The Gorillaz, Metallica, Skinny Puppy etc etc.

I'm finding that a lot of the Japanese bands are very talented musicians. Some of the music is very well structured and atmospheric. Some of the bands i've started listening to certainly seem to go down a slighlty Industrial/Gothic route, neither of which i'm hugely fond of...but i find myself liking the way the Japanese artists do it.

1 thing i'm really not fond of is that there seems to be a lot of Emo type bands that remind of too much of western bands such as Lost Prophets...i detest that sort of music. But, i just quickly move on from those and there are a lot of good bands out there.

Looking forward to discovering more.

diego187 04-01-2010 07:04 PM

yeah, I started listening to Japanese music because I noticed that you can have a pop song but they are well structured and talented. For example Gackt, and the bass on songs like Seki Rey or Mizerable.

Also, that's not the only reason I hear Japanese music. I found my favorite band called Envy (a more underground band) who use to be Hardcore and now it introduced post rock to its songs. A band totally different from what I have found in any other country. It's sound can be compared to Explosions in the Sky or Mono, but with screams and all their songs with a simple formula but very effective that leads to and ascending climax.

YouTube - Envy - A Warm Room

So in conclusion, In Japan I found even mainstream music very well done, compared to music in USA and Mexico. Though of all the music I hear probably only 30% is in Japanese and 70% english and 0% spanish (Mexican music sux so hard).
And yeah, I don't mind to tell other people that I hear Japanese music because all the above stated and more.

Thanks alot for putting me onto Envy just now, Im hugely into Post rock and this track fits perfectly, i'll have to find the rest of this album, and check the older hardcore style
Arigatou!

Anemone 04-02-2010 03:24 AM

After finding L'Arc~en~Ciel through Fullmetal Alchemist and the theme Ready Steady Go, and wanting to find and listen to more, it's now something that is part of me, because it's most of what I listen to and music is a good part of my life...but I don't like [i]all[i] of it. I don't like a lot of the pop groups or singers, but I'm willing to try anything.

I'm glad you like them! after posting here I made a topic for the band showing their sound at the different records they have.

Other amazing songs like a warm room can be found on Insomniac Doze, I recommend:
-Further Ahead Of Warp
-Scene
-The Unknown Glow (15 minutes long, but god, they are worth it.)
-Night In Winter

HarajukuLima 04-06-2010 09:51 PM

I can't see being ashamed of loving a band quite like X-Japan. ;)

Aota 04-06-2010 10:11 PM

I haven't been on here in a WHILE. Wow.

Hm. Well, I haven't listened to J-Rock, etc lately because I've been broadening my horizons musically. My reason for why I listened to it in the first place? Same reason as me not listening to it as much nowadays. Looking for new things.

YukisUke 04-26-2010 02:53 AM

I'm not ashamed of m interest in J-Pop and J-Rock. If someone asks me what type of music I listen to, I'll tell them straight up. If they don't like it, they can go f**k themselves!! LMFAO!! :D

kawaiicandie 04-26-2010 05:47 AM

why do i listen to j-music?

well, i live in japan and it's readily available to me, for one, and i hear much more of it on the radion/tv/while shopping than any foreign music... like, even the big hit songs like lady gaga or whatever, we get them late... i kinda have no idea what's popular back home right now...

also, i got really into visual kei since i got here. i really enjoy the pop-punk style, and the crazy aestethics fit into my likes just fine :) so it's really fun. people think i'm weird for liking visual kei, but whatever (people think it's weirder for me to like visual kei than my good 29y.o. friend who is obsessed with johnny's bands... go figure....)

and finally, im struggling so hard to learn japanese that i guess i think on some level, if i keep listening to japanese music, it will help me learn it? lol.

also, i believe some other people mentioned it before but, i feel japanese music has a childish, happy side to it, which is really fun for me. i like the cheesiness.

Teruko 04-30-2010 09:31 PM

It was weird, because one day I had this sudden craving to look up gothic lolita, and YouTube was one of the sights I went to. Well, I ended up watching some visual kei videos as well, and the song playing on one of them was "Taion" by the GazettE. After that, J-rock, along with some J-pop, is mostly what I've been listening to ever since. For one, the singers don't usually sound like girls (*cough* Justin Bieber *coughcough*). Their voices instead are unique and sound amazing. I fell in love with the visual kei style as well, but that's a whole other subject. The music is actually about the music and not about the fame, which unfortunately is not the issue over here with most of the music I used to listen to. The songs are catchy, and it helped inspire me to start learning guitar again. I feel so full of life when I listen to it. :D

YukisUke 05-05-2010 01:01 PM

I'm not ashamed to listen to Japanese music. I LOVE it. With Japanese music, they tend to go in every angle. They do rap, hip-hop, R&B, pop, rock, punk rock, jazz, the traditional stuff, and a little of everything else. What I like about it is that they mix it up from time to time, blending the genres to make it their own. I listen to Japanese music constantly. And I'm not afraid to make it known to others!! LOL! :D

Axelle 05-15-2010 07:18 PM

I am horrible about remembering when something started...I think that I found J-rock thanks to Final fantasy...through Gackt and then it was the GazettE...my first song was Distress and Coma and I totally fell in love with it. Then I found a chat room and forums about VK and asked for recommendations...and now a group of people always sends me some PVs and so on...

I've noticed lately that after meeting with j-rock and VK...American or british songs seem so ridiculously simple to me...that's why I prefer Jrock and VK.

And about the poll...I tell only friends. I am quite a shy person so I don't say everyone everything about me. But when someone really and honestly wants to know even though I don't know him I tell him...I live in country where people are not so opened to new things and I know the reactions of my family and neibours. I am very happy that I found great music style and I am not ashamed of it but I don't think that some people are...I must say it...stupid and don't tolerate great things because they live in stereotype and don't know anything else. So, avoiding news is normal for them...-.-

I completely agree with this!! Where I live, people aren't very open to "different" things, and will bash you for it without thinking twice. Like, if it's not on the t.v. or radio, you can't like it. T_T

To be honest, it was the looks! Not because I liked the way they looked, but because I wanted to hear what kind of music they played. I had never seen Visual Kei before (7th grade when I discovered it :P) so I was curious to find out what their sound was like. At that time I had listened to mostly British pop/rock, so I was pretty creeped out (in a good way haha) when I clicked on a picture of the GazettE, leading to their Filth in the Beauty PV :D
It's been three years since then, and I've listened to nothing but VK bands, and eventually I made my way over to jpop. I love Japanese music because it's WAY different from the stuff you would hear in America. Not just the looks, but the whole composition of their music is different. And especially the lyrics. They're so poetic and detailed. They make you think, and to me, that's pretty damn amazing.

When it comes to telling people, only my family and close friends know. My family hates that everything I like is Japanese, or related to Japanese culture, so I tend to feel like an outsider even around them. :X
At school, everyone is just crazed Kesha and Katy Perry fans. It's actually very annoying, but I like that my interests and taste in music are different from theirs. But I don't think of myself as special or anything just because of that, I wanted to clear that up before people get the wrong impression of me. >_<

jOKER1989 09-08-2010 02:27 PM

Well, it is not a problem for me and if anyone asked me I will tell him\her :" Everyone with his intrests" thats all.

Thanks for posting:ywave:

JamboP26 09-08-2010 02:36 PM

I don't see why anyone should have shame in liking it. I go about wearing an An Cafe T-Shirt and a the GazettE t-shirt. And a Vidoll bass plectum on a necklace. I have no shame in liking such brilliant music. The only things you should be shameful about, is anything illegal.

SaintKat 09-09-2010 01:08 AM

I listen to some of it because I like how it sounds, same as music from anywhere else in the world. I have no problems admitting it in conversation if it comes up, but won't go out of my way to announce it.

AnnaJapana 09-09-2010 04:10 AM

I likey J- music

Though others Dislike J-music (mostly Because Language and Race) I see the Diversity as something to embrace and to give it some time To understand,Not to just Dismiss it just like that,I never Understood J-music When I first Started, but I enjoy every moment I Get to listen to it.
