Soccer Name Idea
 

Hi, I was hoping someone here could help. We are starting a new soccer club here in Hawaii. We want it to be in Japanese, something bold that would describe our team. They are very skillful.
We want it to be one name, something easy to say, simple, yet says, "Watch out these guys are good."

For example, we really like Abunai, but that is already taken.

Any suggestions?

That sounds pretty weird to Japanese ear, lol.
It would be same to you, however, when we have on our T-shirts, “Tropical, Hawaian Passion, etc”.


So, how do you like it ? “Yabai !! ” (やばい！, ヤバイ！) :D

I guess you are right.
What is the meaning of Yabai?

Yabai is colloquial and basically interjectional, like： Oh, no!, Oops, Darn, etc...
And also means “chancy”, “hot”, “risky”.

Recently, however, among the youngers they often use this word as positive one. For example,

やばい品物！ (Hot stuff !!)
この料理、やばい！ (This dish terrifically tastes good !)
あいつら、ヤバイぜ！ (Those guys are incredibly smart !)
Thinking of the requirements you gave us above (in red), I recommend the word (yet still sounds weird to Japanese ear, but acceptable).
Sorry for my poor English, I hope you can grasp what I want to say.

Thanks, that sounds like what I wanted. Of course I don't want it to sound funny to the Japanese, as there are many here.

Would you recommend another name? What are sports' team names? I am open to all suggestions.

FYI, your english is great! And you have been helpful. Glad I asked, the only dictionary said Yabai means dangerous, not at all close to the definetions you gave.

Definitely, Yabai means “dangerous”. When you say　あいつら、ヤバイぜ！ , which I gave you in my last post, it generally means “They look way dangerous !”

Now then, let me show you some choices I can think of at this moment.

Meijin (めいじん　名人　hot shot, master)
SugoUde (すごうで　凄腕　highly-skilled, extremely-skilled)
Kengou (けんごう　剣豪　great swordsman)
Samurai (さむらい　侍:p )
Muteki (むてき　無敵　unbeatable, this one reminds us of a famous 無敵艦隊 “Spanish Armada”.
In fact, here in Japan we call Spanish National Team of football, 無敵艦隊 Muteki-Kantai, unbeatable fleet)

Tensai (てんさい　天才　genius)
Oujya (おうじゃ　王者　champion, monarch)

Though I have no clue which ones would be easy to say for you, and others would be not, I will be glad if could be of any help to you.
And I don't think you need to worry about how it would sound to the Japanese.

NAME (of the hometown or of the campany who manages the team) & Nickname (some are borrowed from other language, some are coined).

That's my old orthodontist's last name. How strange...

Was the orthodontist of Japanese descent ?
Shimizu is not only a name of the district (where you can get a good view of Mt.Fuji ), but also fairly common Japanese last name.
