Awesome thread, Ao-kun/Ryuk!!! Katanas so rock XD~! But I have one question... Are katars and kanatas related? For those who don't know how katar looks like, I'll put it up in my next post here :p

In any case, here's a clip I copied from the other samurai thread :mtongue: Hope ya enjoy it ^^

that clip is cool xD
lookie here...

thsi picie is so funny^^

dragonrazor 04-10-2007 04:16 PM

by katars, do you actually mean Katals? a Katal is a kind of dagger made in India, i believe. it has a sharply angled blade, with a flat handle that you grip in your palms. the blade extends out from the knuckleguards...i'll see if i can find a pic

hmmm...interesting, maybe Katal is a mispronunciation, because i'm not finding any images or articles on them

they've got quite a variety listed under katar....

AoshiShinomori 04-10-2007 04:48 PM

Yep. The katar is an Indian weapon *sadly I don't know much about it coz I kinda dislike it*

No, its not related to the katana in way other than being a knifing tool! :D

A katar is a more fluid weapon to weild. First up, it's got a small blade so its used for close combat only. You can directly see that your defence perimeter is going to be very limited with such a weapon. On the other hand, its easily manouverable so it allows for a more fluid fighting style.

You could think of it as the "sai"... the weapon that...lemme see... raphael uses in TMNT. It's also the one Elektra weilds. They are small weapons too and they rarely have a sharp edge. Fighting with Sais usually involved piercing with the edge and blocking with the blade.

I guess I confused you now more than clearing up things...:o...sorry it's a blood trait of mine *Mwahahahaha*

dragonrazor 04-10-2007 06:00 PM

interestingly enough, the british made a variant on the katar that splits into three blades at the press of a button on the handle....they made it so that it would do the most damage if you stab with it, then turn it

I don't know, think about it this way, because you have to defend quickly the weapon has no blade...that's more of a reason to have a triton look, you can catch certain sharp objects, without worry of dulling the edge, very unlike a sword...I think sai's are more balanced in attack and defense than a katana...because you have to be in a good position not to get slashed by the oppenent's sword, and if anything slips, Up there goes a finger or arm...or both...The problem wqith a sai's offense is like a a long armed/body boxer, to a small armed/body boxer. The one with the most reach, just has to keep the other guy at length so he doesn't have to defend and only has to attack...plus, sai's usually come in two's one for defense and one for attack, kinda splitting the need, unless the enemy has two swords, then it's a hack job...katana's have their purpose, and sai's have theirs...

kokunin 04-10-2007 06:37 PM

no like a skinier katana..it was longer too...

dragonrazor 04-10-2007 09:11 PM

hmm...the Ono Dachi is the only longer version of a katana i remember ever seeing...it's not an execution sword, it's the same kind of sword Sephiroth's Masamune, or PSO's Tsumikiri J-sword is. unless you're talking about a nodachi, which is a long, slender blade with a longer handle, straight edged...it's made for thrusting, not for swinging

i have a few modern reproductions....i wouldn't call them real, since they aren't handforged, and they aren't carbon steel (they're stainless)

AoshiShinomori 04-10-2007 11:19 PM

*sigh* I don't have a katana but I really want one! *Hopes OL-chan will get him one :D*

So continuing with education on swords, here is a special type of katana:

Shikomizue

The Shikomizue (transalates to Japanese prepared cane) is a Japanese concealed sword disguised as a cane or walking stick ( Watch out for them grandad's :D ). It was sometimes used by government officials in Japan in the Meiji period.

The name Shikomi-zue is actually the name of a type of mounting though. The sword blade was placed in a cane-like mounting (tsue), to conceal the fact that it was a sword. This mounting was used almost exclusively during the Meiji period, when the carrying of swords was banned. The blades used in these mountings were usually of poor quality.

This type of arrangement was most often used by period samurai who opposed the ban on openly carrying their swords but knew that open violation of the law often led to imprisonment and death.

Here are some pics!

Notice how the blade is straight and not curved...

And another one in beige

Shikomizue has appeared many times in Manga and anime. It has appeared a few times in the anime and manga series Rurouni Kenshin. It has also the weapon used by the fictional character Zatoichi, a blind bonesetter who is also an extremely talented warrior.

In another anime series, Bleach, Kisuke Urahara's zanpakutou is a shikomizue, when sealed. A similar sword is also used by Ukyo Tachibana from the video game series Samurai Shodown and Hibiki Takane from the The Last Blade.

Katars are my favourite kinda weapon though ^_^ Yeah, the deal a lot ofdamage when you use three blades XD One more thing i wanna know though, is which class of warriors use them the most (as weapons)?

Vesperd 04-11-2007 11:31 AM

I have 2 Katanas, 1 tiger sword, 4 ninja swords, and a dragon sword(just for looks).:p
plus I have 2 dagers and 2 knifes.

I was trained on the tiger sword, and on a tie chi sword but those are chinese weapons not japanese.

all together i have 12 sharp and deadly weapons hanging around my room. u got 2 feel safe when ur sleeping in there:p

dragonrazor 04-11-2007 12:35 PM

just to clarify....most people ASSUME that all straight katana are ninja swords...

ALL NINJA SWORDS ARE DOUBLE EDGED

thank you

moving right along, some samurai used straight, singleedged katana for stealth missions, because they could be worn on the back and removed quickly from their sheaths.

dragonrazor 04-11-2007 03:48 PM

that's a variant on the Jin Tachi used by the old Emperor's Guard...the longer handle allows for better grip and control

AoshiShinomori 04-11-2007 05:04 PM

i think this is what you wanted...a pole sword

AoshiShinomori 04-11-2007 06:04 PM

HOLY COWWWWWWW!  ! That has got to be the best pic (pick :D) on this thread so far!

Why don't you elaborate on them too DR! It would go so well! stuff like, why are they long? Any specific advantages/disadvantages in fighting with them... like I can see that Iaijutsu (and of course battoujutsu) is going to be really awkward with these :D

pole blade sounds more like a variation on a naginata. the orinals were blade (with hilt) put in poles and then SLICE and DICE TIME!!!!

kokunin 04-11-2007 06:11 PM

its a rather short blade for the length of the handle...I mean you could flew, PUT SOME CARBON IN THAT STEEL!!! COMONE PUT YOUR BACK INTO IT!!! :BLOWS OUT BACK!!!: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!" :roles around to get to destinations from now:

um, well, what i know is taken from Xenosaga 3, so please bear with me...essentially, a pole sword is a massive twohanded sword. It can't be wielded with one hand because of the length of the hilt. the hilt is made for gripping power. essentially the longer handle means a more powerful slash. interestingly enough, Jin Uzuki, from Xenosaga 3, can use both twin katanas AND a pole sword on his ES unit (a giant robot with enhanced capabilities). the pole sword deals heavy damage, but it's basically a oneswing weapon. it takes a lot of effort to reverse the stroke and switch directions. but it's good if you want to cut through a defending person << >> it would almost certainly cleave through any kind of armor or shield...probably even behead a person who is trying to cover their head with their arms (consequently taking off the arms in the process)

agreed....the pole sword used in Xenosaga 3 has a blade that would be at least three times longer than that in relation to the user

AoshiShinomori 04-11-2007 06:14 PM

The Scimitar!

A scimitar (sh'mit'ter) is a sword with a curved blade design finding its origins in western Asia (Middle East).

The name can be used to refer to almost any Middle Eastern sword with a curved blade. They include Arabic saif, Indian talwar, Persian shamshir, and Turkish kilij, among others. These blades all were developed from the ubiquitous parent sword, the Turko-Mongol saber.

The scimitar "technology" was also used by Egyptians in setting up their domination over their territories, although it was borrowed and not invented by them.

Here is a pic of one:

Scimitars have been used in many media sources. Some of these are:

1. The Calormen warriors and royalty fight with scimitars in C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia.

2. Fantasy author R.A. Salvatore's dark elf protagonist Drizzt Do'Urden wields a pair of enchanted scimitars

3. In the movie "The Mummy" the medjai "Ardeth", the one who fights alongside brendan fraiser also uses a scimitar.

The reason it is put up on this thread is to show a comparison of between this and the Katana. The Scimitar has a much more pronounced curve in its swordblade when compared with the Katana!

Edit:
Guys and Gals, I would humbly request that you don't quote pics in your posts. Just remove the img and /img tags around the url and leave only the link. If you wish to only quote text then remove the pic altogether. Thanks in advance for helping out with this :vsign:

dragonrazor 04-11-2007 06:27 PM

actually, someone made a pair of swords used by Drizz't. they're available on Budkww.com however, they are NOT scimitars in that. they are single edged, but they aren't curved. was the character ever used in a movie?

AoshiShinomori 04-11-2007 06:35 PM

Now that you ask...come to think of it, I've never heard of Drizzt being in a movie or even anime (cartoons in general) for that matter! In the stories though he had both an elvish scimitar with a phenominally magical sharp blade and an Ice scimitar that could cut through and destroy demons (beings of fire core's). I'll try and post up more comparison pics... though I've got to put up that special post that I thought of from your earlier comment :D
