Maybe you could fill me in on something.
So I've been trying to get a language exchange going for sometime now. So far I've emailed 6 ads posted on Craigslist for Language Exchange, without any success. One thing in common with all 6 was they all stopped responding when I mentioned or hinted at my nationality. A lil about me: I'm 25 m born in Taiwan and been living in Los Angeles since I was a wee little tike (came here when I was 5). With that being said lemme give you a brief recap of what happened and maybe you guys can give me your point of view in all this.
Language exchange #1 Answered the ad and the emails went back and forth pretty seamlessly. It was pretty sweet, I was teaching her some slang we use in LA, and she was teaching me some Japanese cuss words. On my seventh email, she asked me to describe myself more. I mentioned I was Taiwanese, among other things. I didn't get a response back. "meh" I though "Maybe she found another Language Exchange partner." So I brushed it off and continued with my search. Language Exchange #2 Same thing happened. About 5 or 6 emails into it, she asks: What's your nationality? When I answered, the emails stopped. "Maybe she doesn't like Taiwanese people," I thought. Language Exchange #3 One of the emails she asked why I wanted to learn Japanese. "Well, I grew up watching alot of Japanese cartoons, Gundam, Voltron, Doraemon." For anyone who doesn't know: Doraemon was a cartoon that was very popular in Asian countries, and I think that was a dead give away to my race. Needless to say, the emails stopped. Language Exchange #4 - 6 Pretty much went the same way, mentioned or hinted at my nationality and the emails stopped. Keep in mind all emails were going fine till I mentioned my nationality. So here is my question: Is there an unspoken hatred between our 2 races? Should I even continue to try and learn Japanese, seeing that Japanese people don't like any other Asian races? Or was this due to bad luck and I just happened to meet 6 people (in a row) that just don’t like Taiwanese people. Anyone's point of view in this would be appreciated. Thank you |

lol ummm yeh well sorry to get back on topic, but anyway =P
i havent read that jap exchange list yet, but ummm i may have read wrong, but im assuming that all those exchanges you had were with japanese girls? im thinking that those girls were mostly emailing you coz they were seeking a relationship or something and from my experience to japan, most of the ones that use thier phone for emailing rather than getting a boyfriend in japan, are the ones hunting for mostly ummm non asian people I dont think its because they have some hatred towards asian countries, its just that, jap girls LOVE white guys for some reason lol i exchange emails with many of my friends in japan, and a lot of them are girls around my age. But we both know we're not looking for a relationship online, so we're always emailing and stuff, (oh and im australian born chinese/malaysian btw) |
I think Shadowulf is probably right. It is probably young girls thinking they are doing a language exchange with Justin Timberlake or something.
Next time, tell them you are from Los Angeles. If YOU aren't looking for a hook-up, then what's a little fib for a language exchange? |
