What if I think the best place to live is in the Kansai region, not northern Japan...?

I think you`ll find a thousand different answers to this. I personally prefer the area in which I live, which is not northern Japan. (And not Tokyo or the Kansai area either)

It`s sort of like asking the best place to live in the US. Even if you say you don`t want to live in New York, there are still so many options that most everyone you ask will have a different answer.

If you're interested in Northern Japan...then I guess check out the northern regions, like Hokkaido or the northern parts of Honshu.

I've been to all the prefectures in Northern Japan. In fact, I've been to all but 5 of the 47 prefectures of Japan. But I still don't know what the best place to live is...

Let me give you one Japanese saying that may or may not tell you something.

"Sumeba miyako" = Wherever you live will become the capital.

I (for some reason) want to live in Hokkaido, but I have absolutely no logical reasoning behind that...it's just a random whim that's sticking...

You know, to my knowledge, Hokkaido doesn't have as many scary bugs there either. Every time I think of bugs, which I am a bit scared of, I'm tempted to not apply to JET in fear of getting a placement where they're rampant....especially Spiders. I'm deathly afraid of spiders.

Well, the largest city in Northern Japan is Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture.

It is relatively close to Tokyo and has all the basic things you need.

I think Hirosaki located in the Aomori Prefecture in the Tohuku region of Japan is a nice place to live. They also have the famous Hirosaki Castle there.

I found some nice Hirosaki pictures!:)

Just 2 more.:)

I agree with Sakesan, Aomori is a nice place to live in, though, "BEST" is purely subjective, so good luck :)

What about Funabashi? :p
Seriously, Chiba can be a good place for a foreigner because it's really cheaper than Tokyo, and not so much far.

Also Kawasaki (just below Tokyo) can be also a good choice for people working in Tokyo.
