Some people want to meet foreigners to learn English.
Some people want to meet foreigners because their daddies told them not to.
Some people want to meet foreigners because they want to have someone they know from a foreign country.

I was never really interested in people (male or female) that were interested in me solely because of my nationality.

However I did make lots of friends who were interested in me as a person, and couldn't care less about where I was born. Those are the people I still visit when I go back to Japan.

I just managed to find the small outings that used a mix of Japanese and English. Japanese usually ended up dominating the night as more beers came, which was good for my own studying purposes.

I agree there. Now when I visit I only go to a couple tiny pubs where I know the owners and I can hang out, even if there are no other customers there. Those are the kinds of places where I learned most of my Japanese, really.

Those tiny bar owners are so friendly and patient!

I remember one time I just spent all night (literally, I left the bar at 7:00 AM when he realized he should be closed) just talking with one back and forth in basic English and Japanese. Didn't spend much that night either. I think at the high point of that night there was 5 people.

Business picked up for him nicely the following year however. Its still a nice place, and I'll be sure to visit it again if/when the opportunity arises.

You are starting to sound like the people that you have been complaining about all day.

I'm pretty sure that's every man's dream.

Here I thought that it's good to marry a person for who he/she is, not for what he/she is. I know for a fact, I'd never go for a guy because of his nationality, social status, etc. If there's no emotional attachment or love involved, then neither one of us will ever be truly happy together and might become resentful over it.

Isn't that being shallow, though? You're talking about physical aspects, but no emotional ones, or even anything indicating love.

Yea, but it depends on how you define drop dead gorgeous...

In Japan, there is a perception among people that, foreign men have bad taste in Japanese women.

I noticed this as well and I personally think that's the reason why Japanese men are not upset about foreigners taking our women.

Japanese men have a definition of beauty. It's not universal, but there are standards. Obviously not all Japanese women fall into that catagory. Men from other countries might have different definitions of beauty. Some overlap with Japanese men's ideas, and some don't. I knew foreign guys in Japan that liked big girls. I knew some that liked really tall girls. These are two types of women Japanese men tend not to be attracted to.

You can call it "bad taste" if you want, but it's just a matter of preference and culture. I knew Japanese guys that dated girls I found incredibly unattractive, so I guess it works both ways. If we all had the same tastes, there would be a lot of lonely people aout there.

This was also vice-versa in my experience.

I saw Japanese women/men hook up with some awful gaikokujin during my stay.
