I've never been to Japan, but this stood out for me. I was always under the impression that it was the other way around. The Japanese go out of their ways to not come across doing anything, that'd cause embarrassment for their home or the company or their country, etc. If I'm wrong, someone who has been there or resided there, please feel free to correct me.

Substitute "People" for "The Japanese" in this instance, and "others who make random assumptions about them" for "anyone" - and it is accurate. Expecting everyone to fawn over you and love you on first sight is a bit unrealistic, don`t you think? Especially when you`re carrying these inaccurate preconceptions around.

*Decides to be prejudice myself* I think it's an American mentality. Seems that Americans expect everything to be catered to them no matter where they go. I guess you could say that we American tend to be a bit spoiled at times.
