Tokushima bound (and work)
 

Hi

Im looking at moving to Tokushima for 2 years to live with my girlfriend. Ive been there once so know that its quite small and out of the way especially for a foreigner.

Besides accommodation, one of the main issues will be work. I work in banking (and prior to that export) but do not expect to find work in that field there...more so as i don't speak any Japanese for the time being.

It seems the only real option is to teach a language. Im bilingual English - French. Besides being an English native speaker from Australia I also hold a diploma to teach French. Strangely the only teaching Ive actually done is in banking for derivative products hahahaha....

Ive thought about doing a weekly hop to Tokyo but for the time being have had no bites from recruitment agencies despite being in a more sought after field. Frankly though Im not that keen on doing all that travel every week.

Anyway for the time being Im just sounding the forum about peoples working experiences in smaller towns.....

You can try applying at GEOS in Tokushima. GEOS' corporate headquarters are located there, and I know they have a large school located there as well. Your best bet would be to apply as a children's teacher in English, they prefer people who like to teach children, though you'll probably teach adults as well.

Normally language teachers don't get much choice when it comes to where they are going to work in Japan. You are usually sent where the company needs you. After your first year, you can usually request to work in a certain city, and your company will try to get you a position there.

Most new teachers want to work in the big cities, such as Tokyo or Osaka. Because of that, there are usually few positions available for new teachers in those cities. Companies do offer you a choice as to where you want to work, and will try to get you close. Your odds are actually better if you request to work in a smaller town.
