Tired of America

Male 21
Language: English, Mandarin
Degree: Graduated HS dropped out of college with 60 credits
Barely know any japanese only know some words here and there from J-drama and anime

I was thinking of moving to Japan with no plan at all...

If i go there with 10,000usd will that last me a while to find a full time job that will allow me to pay rent and have some money on the side?

PS: don't really care what kind of job i get just enough pay to live in japan... is this request easily do-able?

Nyororin 10-01-2008 06:39 AM

You`re not going to be able to stay in Japan more than 3 months, regardless of how much money you have, unless you have secured a job for yourself and gone through all the proper visa procedures. There are a countless number of threads on here about just this very thing - look around a bit and gather some facts.

Short answer: no.

1) no college degree

2) no one hires people with a tourist visa

3) you don't speak Japanese

4) you have no plan at all

Why not register to vote, volunteer, become a Big Brother and try and make a difference at home?

Sangetsu 10-01-2008 10:06 AM

The irony is amazing. Today I was talking to a Japanese who said he was tired of living in Japan, and wished more than anything that he could move to the US or the UK.

Too bad you and he couldn't trade identities for a year or two, I don't doubt that both you and he would feel homesick before long and want to return.

It's after 7 pm here now, and I'm looking out my window watching the last of students leaving for home. Yes, it's after 7, and there are still kids at the high school. There are also classes on Saturday and Sunday, how many American students would like to spend as much time in school as Japanese students often do?

Don't knock life in America, make the best of it, and be thankful.

Ronin4hire 10-01-2008 10:33 AM

I think it's safe to say that you won't make it in Japan.

However if you want a working holiday you could come here to New Zealand? American's are entitled to such a visa (I'm pretty sure of it though you might want to double check that). All you need is financial support ($NZ6000 which is $US4000) and a ticket.

College degrees aren't necessary to get jobs here too. Plus with your ability to speak Mandarin, and New Zealand's recent free trade deal with China and the large Chinese speaking community here you would probably do quite well.

AntiCitizen 10-01-2008 11:19 AM

come to the Uk its great here especially London, japans great but Uk has more cultural similarity and we have great history and heritage. At least you can still speak english in the Uk.

haha you won't be so happy if you end up with a toilet cleaning job heheh
If you like you can come to England and join my filmmaking crew. We're only student filmmakers in college but we're still working on very ambitious projects.
Why are you so eager to move to japan:confused:

Sinestra 10-01-2008 06:28 PM

Another short answer Japan is great but remember a little old saying.

"The grass is not always greener on the other side"

Also, look at MMM's post thats all you need to know.

How can someone who couldn't endure a U.S. college for even 2 years ever expect to succeed in any foreign country where they do not know the language, the culture, or the people? Are you delusional, because that is too stupid to come from someone with even 60 college credits? Get off the chat rooms and entertainment web sites and get a life!

SSJup81 10-01-2008 07:07 PM

I thought 60 credits was equivalant to two years.

SGTOkinawa 10-01-2008 07:18 PM

60 credits is usually just under 3 semesters, if you take a full course load. And if you take foreign languages the credits rack up even faster because each class has a higher credit value because of the labs.

Of course if you only take 12 hours per semester then its 5 semesters, but usually that's the bare minimum to be considered a full time student.

kenmei 10-01-2008 08:08 PM

you can always stay illegally and try to push japanese & tourists into rap clothing stores in harajuku...or into host bars :ywave:

I don't know about your school but at my school 60 credits would be 2 years as well. 15 credits per semester and each class is worth 3 credits. so 15 x 4 semester is 60 credits.

Oh man, those guys were SO annoying. I saw them in little flocks in Shibuya all the time too, and I'm 95% sure they were selling weed there XD

Same here, and just about every other school in the country :)

Let's see if s/he posts again before we waste too much time.

Yeah, pretty much how I saw it too, especially since 120 credits = Bachelor's degree = four years.

Yeah, let's sign him up for a crapload of spam... :)

Also, I notice he seems to have targeted MMM, by putting what I assume is MMM's email address at the bottom of his post, hoping people will send their angry replies to him.

IwantToMoveToJapan 10-03-2008 04:07 PM

The user doesn't care, he jumps on, post stupid comments, get kick off, sign up with a different name again, post more crap...........

I was thinking of something more destructive than signing him up for spam.... all i need is his IP

10,000 usd is roughly 1,000,000 yen probably less than that, and I hear Japan is really expensive... Jaiyou!

Not without a Visa, and you can't do that unless some Japanese employer hires you, and in order for a Japanese employer to hire you, you have to "have something" that an actual Japanese person doesn't have, ya know, to make the guy want to hire you. With the whole language barrier, I don't see how you could get by in that regard.

Aside from English teaching, which you need a degree for in general, I don't see what other job you could do and if anything, seems it'd be preferred for something long-term, not short.

He thinks I am a mod and that I banned him in some other form a long while ago. He is obvioulsy mistaken.

SSJup is right. You need to have a work visa. To get a work visa you need an employer/sponsor. No restaurant is going to go through the headaches of and red tape of hiring a foreigner and try to prove that you have a unique skill that a Japanese person cannot do. That's why 95% of foreigners in Japan are language teachers.

OsakaPapa 10-04-2008 06:45 AM

If you are really serious about moving to Japan, do yourself a huge favor and finish college. So many doors open for you by accomplishing that. I dunno how much of a looker you are, but you can always try to work in a host club =P

You don't have to be good looking to work in a host club, but you need to have a couple suits and be fluent in Japanese. You also need to either have a day job and a work visa or never plan on returning to America and live as an illegal alien.

Arnautu 10-04-2008 07:25 AM

Me personally, I would not want to move to Japan, to visit? yeah I would very much like that, probably in the next 2 and a half years....
