I definitely mean yen. As everyone asking seems to be using different currencies, I didn`t bother converting it into any.

in germany we dont have a middleschool. we have only primary and highschool.
both are for free. how many years do childs visit highschool?

how much does a uniform cost?
In Japan, elementary school is 6 years, middle is 3 years, and high is 3 years.
A total of 12 years of pre-university schooling.

A uniform really depends on the school itself - some are cheaper than others.
According to my husband, his middle school uniform (all things included) was about $500. For high school, about $800.

but do they need only one or more for changing?
maybe if the uniform is getting dirty..

High School will kill ya then. Thats what I figured.

Exactly! That`s what everyone does - that`s why the cost of living is high even for people who don`t have children. They`re saving up money for later. The money has to come from somewhere, so it gets counted into everyone`s cost of living. That`s why it doesn`t seem all that expensive if you`re just here for a year or two teaching English - you don`t have to budget in that saving for the future.

is the cost of living in the CBD of london about the same as the CBD of japan? Also will a salary of 14million yen be sufficent for living in tokyo?

Sorry, I completely forgot to answer that one. That answer is a definite YES! I have heard the average is 6 uniforms - you see, the uniforms change based on the season. You have a spring/summer uniform and a autumn/winter uniform. Most students have 3 sets of jacket and pants/skirt, and up to 10 shirts. Sort of like business suits - you wear the same pants and jacket for several days, but you change the shirt and tie everyday.

As school uniforms can`t be washed at home (They have to be dry cleaned) you can`t always know when you will be able to clean them. I have NEVER heard of anyone only having one uniform.

Depending on the school, the uniform also sometimes varies based on the grade, so you pretty much have no choice but to buy a new set of uniforms every year regardless of whether they still fit or not.

Do all schools have uniforms? I have seen schools where the guys were all black. Black pants, shoes, and a long sleeve black shirt. The girls wear a white shirt, a black skirt, and a black over coat/shirt. Is this a common uniform? Or is it only for a certain place/region? Did you go to school there and wear these types of clothing?

Are uniforms optional? This has always interested me, and I have never got a good enough answer.

Some elementary schools the uniforms seem to be optional, but junior high and especially high school the uniforms are not optional.

Every school has their own unique uniform chosen most likely by the PTA and/or teachers.
