living in japan as a musician - rehearsal space
I was wondering if anyone knows how hard it is to find a small rehearsal room to rent in Osaka/Tokyo where someone could practice music. I want to move to Japan to study music and my instrument of choice is drums and I would need to have a space in a commercial district where I could practice 24 hours a day without getting noise complaints.
Cost is not a huge issue as long as it wouldn't be more than $2000 US a month to rent or something. I know that Japan has a huge underground music scene so I know lots of Japanese kids must do this often since most people live in apartments where you can't play loud music. I just can't locate anything online. I tried Craigslist but there aren't that many listings in the Japan section compared to US listings. If anyone has any leads I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks! Jon |
In my experience, people rent studio space with drums there. Most live houses have drumsets, as people taking the train to gigs can't carry a drumset with with. Those rental studios are by the hour, and prices vary. Hours vary, too, but some are open late.

It would be difficult to rent a room with studio in urban area in Japan.
Instead, you can rent rehearsal studio. I usually use "Studio Penta" in Shinjuku. http://www.studiopenta.net/rehearsal/shinjuku.html Studio Penta Otsuka (20 minutes from Shinjuku by train) is much cheaper than Shinjuku. http://www.studiopenta.net/rehearsal/ohtsuka.html |
Same problem for me, only guitar. Only advantage is you can always turn down guitar... drums.... they're always loud!

Thanks! :)
