A lot of people are saying you should go for a week and check it out, but in my opinion that's a terrible waste of money. There is no possible way you can even get a glimpse of the working lifestyle here unless you just bite the bullet and move.

This is just my opinion and the way most people I know have chosen to come here. Most people don't have enough money to travel half way across the world to check out every country they think they might want to live in in the future. Of course, if you've got the money to do that then go for it. Unfortunately the average person doesn't though.

Straight fact.

Note: 'can' means 'is possible to do' it doesn't mean to encourage.

I made a statement how you being at an University doesn't add up and will NOT happen to 99% of people who go thinking they have the "gangsta curisma" to get by.

I just wanted to point out that I think we're having quite a nice little debate here. It's gone 8 pages. Why do you want to 'Ban' me? Yu're the one talking about "gangsta curisma" not me, so please cut it out with the attitude talk.

I don't think he deceived anyone, t obe honest I have no idea what's in his resume, what was said at the interview or his past experience. I was wring to say he blagged the job, it's just a word that we use when someone gets lucky you know.

Only you can choose your words, killyoself. You said he had no degree and:

I don't know what "wangle" means, but I know what scam means. It is to not be truthful in order to achieve a purpose. It seemed pretty clear to me that your friend didn't have a degree or much experience, but landed a job teaching at a business school in Shinjuku.
If you want to keep changing your mind about the meaning of what you are saying, that is your choice.

This is what you are being called on.

killyoself 03-19-2009 11:51 AM

Damn, triple post. Sorry

killyoself 03-19-2009 11:55 AM

Ok.

To set the record straight then, my friend didn't do anything dishonest, he still blagged it though.
Better example,
Q."Where did you blag that cigarette from?"
A."That guy over there"

I personally am the type of person that just goes ahead and does something and I think it's a good way to roll. That's just me though. You wanna do something, do it! Or don't do it, either way I don't really care. Point I wanted to make and which has now been made is, you CAN do it.

That's like saying you CAN win the jackpot in a lottery. Is it the safest way though is another matter.

killyoself 03-19-2009 12:29 PM

Oh please, don't compare moving to Japan to winning the lottery.

No of course it's not the safest way. Far from it. The safest way is probably through the American military or Jet program I reckon. I wouldn't recommend either of those though.

Oh yeah, another thing. Nyororin (sorry I can't remember the name off the top of my head, please no offence) made a few good points in her ' I live in Japan' thread. Teaching English pretty much sux ass, and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. It is a means to an end though and can lead to bigger/better things or buy you some time in Japan while you become good enough at Japanese to get a better job.

Thanks for the props - you did get the name right.
I have taught English when we needed money and fast, and when my husband was still in school... And there is very little in this world that could convince me to go back to it. Not so much that teaching itself was horrible, but pretty much every other person teaching was here on a short stint and absolutely awful to be around.

killyoself 03-19-2009 01:18 PM

Yeah, i'm lucky in that respect. Almost everybody I work with at the university is really nice, have settled down here and pretty much know what's going on. Before that i worked in a small, independently run school with my friend from back home and 2 other teachers.
A lot of the teachers I've met from the big Eikaiwa companies are enough to make me want to punch myself in the face for being a fellow gaijin. Which brings me back to the stuff I wrote in my first (deleted) post, so i'm gonna stop now.
