Unless it is a graduate school degree in TEFL, no. Complete waste of time and money but that is personal opinion.

TEFL will mean little in Japan. I have never heard of a Japanese school, private or public, asking for TEFL qualifications.

A degree in English is more than adequate. Some schools may want a TEFL certificate, but there really isn't any point in it, as you'll probably have to follow an their curriculum anyway.

A degree in English (particularly in literature) is considered nearly the equivalent to a degree in education, and it should open a few doors for you.
