Earthquakes
I only wondered if any of these regions were earthquake-prone;
- Kyoto (the city) - Sendai - Sapporo From what I understand, Tokyo and Sendai often face strong earthquakes, Kyoto is relatively safe, and Sapporo isn't seismically active (at least compared to the rest of Japan). |
I live in Kyoto prefecture, although not the city. I have lived here a year and experienced two minor tremors that were hardly more lively than a foot massage.

Japan is the best place to enjoy earthquakes. You are safer here than most other earthquake zones on the planet.
Last year I had the pleasure of enjoying a 6.8 and it also lasted about 45 seconds. Top fun for free. |
How can you enjoy an earthquake when you know people are dying in them?

Earthquakes occur regularly here in the east Kanto area, I usually notice at least one per month. Most are barely noticeable, but others rattle the dishes and send the neighbors outside.
I was in LA when the last 2 major earthquakes hit there. The one in '92 was centered out in the desert, but was still strong enough in the city to black out the power. I had been out with friends and was driving home (it was early Sunday, before the sun came out) when it hit. The lights went out, and all the local radio stations went off the air. I didn't feel the shaking as I was driving, but I couldn't help notice the falling power lines and the lights going out everywhere. The city lights went out, and all the sudden I could see countless stars in the sky (usually only a handful are visible). The '94 earthquake was worse. It literally rolled me out of bed. Highway bridges collapsed, buildings fell, and many people were killed. Strangely, the power did not go out during the second quake. |
