Religion in Japan?

After reading a few things I've realised how much Christianity affects things here in the west.

Personally, I am atheist, and the crime over here that happens because of religion is horrendous. The catholic church has a huge influence on everything, and it's hard trying to imagine a country without it's influence.

So, how much difference is there between Japan and the west? And,
How are different religions/lack of religion viewed in Japan?
