need college degree to teach?

I'm not interested in teaching english to japanese kids in japan. I know a lot of them require you to have a degree in teaching. But some of the ads I have seen don't seem to mention that you need a degree. Some of them just require you to be a native english speaker. it just sort of puzzles me. have there been people that have started their career in teaching english in Japan without a degree?

It may not be a legal requirement, but among the better agencies you will be in competition with those who have not only college degrees, but teaching credentials. I would be suspect of any employer who did not seek those qualifications in their teachers. Some teachers in Korea and Japan have been severly criticized in the past for lack of such qualifications.

I think the best way to think of it is this;

You don`t need a degree to teach. However...

You need to have a visa in order to work in Japan. In order to receive a visa, you need to have a degree or some special talent that is in high demand.

So... Unless you have some other method with which to obtain a visa (married to a Japanese citizen, etc), you`re going to need to have a degree to get a job teaching. Native English Speaker is not a special talent that will get you a visa.

Your post is a little confusing.

Are you interested in teaching English to Japanese kids? Or not interested?

Are you talking about a "regular" teacher? Or an Eikaiwa teacher?

Are you talking about a teaching degree? Or any college degree in general?

What puzzles me is you.

Why are you asking this only a day after you created another thread to ask if a white girl could become a singer in Japan? :confused:
