I want to move to japan as a photographer

Hi everyone

I'm a freelance photographer from NZ and I want to live in Tokyo for a few years.

I've been a few times and absolutely love the culture, colours and people. I've studied Japanese and am trying very hard to become an intermediate to advanced speaker.

I want to work as a photographer preferably photographing fashion and culture, high end. Ive looked at a few magazines and there are so many to choose from.

I'm looking for help in regards to places to stay, and working. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction so I can get my foot in the door of Japanese fashion.

Thanks a tone
Ana:rheart:

Hi,
i'm not familiar with the photo area but you can find fews good site which can help you to find a job in Japan, and i remember saw some postion regarding photographer.

you have gaiijinpot , careercross, workininjapan , and more,
if you have a good Japanese i will suggest you to contact directly some big magazine here (send them a resume and some photo sample) or you can also try the Hello Work (but for that you need to have a valid working visa)
you can check they offer online (Only in Japanese)

Bye and good luck.
PS: if you need some information about Visa in Japan i just wrote a news on my site here about Japanese Visa : How to get a Japanese Visa? | Akiba4you.com

Wow! Thanks for posting this up! I might consider becoming a photographer there too (if music doesn't work out)! I guess it'd need a bachelor's degree though ;/.

Hope to see some of your photos!

There is no shortage of photographers in Japan. Besides the huge number of pros already working here, there are countless amateurs as well, it will be hard for a non-Japanese to compete in such an environment.

Even if you are lucky enough to find occasional work, you might be surprised at how little it pays. I would love to work as a pro too, but teaching English pays better.

Since I have no hope of being a pro photographer, I went into hardware side of the business. I have a home-based business exporting camera and movie equipment. Photography would be more fun, but I make a lot more money selling cameras than I can make selling pictures.
