I have relatives who live near Kofu in Yamanashi. I really like that area.

Surrounded by mountains; the Japanese Alps on one side, Mt. Fuji on the other. Close to Nagano and close enough to Tokyo via the Chuo line that you can easily make a day trip.

It is Japan Alps in the north. It is Mt. Fuji in the south.
Kofushi at the center is a basin.

The springing water is abundant.
The cultivation of the fruit is famous.
Viniculture is famous. (There is a lot of winery, too.)
From Kofu to Tokyo by the special express for 01:30.
It is hot because it is a basin in summer, and cold in winter.
The high school student in Yamanashi has the ”madness marathon rally” once a year.

Godzilla comes uncommonly.

What kind of answer is that? And if your Japanese is "lame" as you say, how do you think you'll fare there? Did you know that Yamanashi prefecture has an English-language website? No? You would have had you tried Google.

A cool answer. And beats explaining exactly what I do which would probally go over most people's heads anyway. I work in AI.

And I freaking know about the Yamanashi prefectural website, I've googled the place to death, this thread isn't a case of 'duh, I've never used google before, do my searching for me'. I mean jesus. How little faith do you people have? If there was someone with actual first hand experience of the place though and something to actually say about it then it would really help. Always good to get informal and honest views of a place rather than relying purely on advertisement brochures.

How will I fare with poor Japanese...we shall see. My job is in English and this wouldn't be the first time I moved to a country without knowing the language. Tokyo is just a hour or two away on the train for the occasional weekend too so...I'm not worried there.
