Hi,

Thanks for sharing your story. I myself live in China for 2 years, and have lived in various other Asian countries for two years before that. I'm studying Chinese language, and when I'm finished will obviously be living in a country where those skills will be needed, but I really would like to visit Japan. I'm thinking that it would be best to find some work while I'm there, as I'm a poor student at the moment. I'm curious how you worked in Japan without a 4 year degree (you didn't have one, right?). It seems you first went to Japan several years ago, so maybe things were different then, but is it possible to visit and find some work for a month or so while visiting? Forgive me if this question has already been asked, but 16 pages of posts is just too much to go through. Also, if posting a question like this is a no-no, please let me know.

Andrew

Okay, I didn`t have a 4 year degree when I started working... However, I had a valid visa (I was married before I started working.) The 4 year degree is a requirement for getting a work visa - but not generally a requirement for actual jobs. However, in order to work, you need to have a valid visa... And the simplest visa for working requires the degree.
I had a dependent visa that allowed unlimited employment when I began working. I have never worked without a valid visa, and certainly wouldn`t suggest trying to do so. Nothing has changed in that area over the years I have been here.

I really don`t think it would be legally possible to work here for a month or so while visiting.

Some private tutoring is one thing - but making a living off of it is different. :mtongue:

I did private tutoring while I was doing my homestay, but it wasn`t exactly anywhere near "work" in my eyes. Plus, to start tutoring you need to have some sort of connections - you can`t exactly advertise, you know?
(Even then, it`s illegal, but...)

If you`re lucky enough to have a friend who wants to have you tutor them under-the-table, sure, but do not count on it in any way.

That is truly awesome. My dream in school was to become a manga artist and live in Japan. Well that was shattered by reality.

However, I have managed to save up enough money for a trip to Japan this June. I'm really looking forward to it.
