Moving to Kyoto, what area is good to live?
Moving to Kyoto to work for a Japanese Company in their international strategy devision. They are willing to pay upto 60,000 rent for my apartment.
Contimplating which area would be good to live in. Thinking about somewhere on Karasuma line - imadegawa? Any information would be great |
I'd chose Gion or Pontocho. Never been there but I've heard those are the most traditional ones.
|
Gion and Pontocho are small and busy areas good only for tourists... I've been in Kyoto only for a holiday, but I strongly suggest not to live there.

Are they still crowded with geikos? I'm guessing not. It'd be cool though, Gion must be the closest to what Japan was 70 years ago. Anyways, if I were to live in Kyoto I'd make sure I got a place in a hanamachi. |
Haha
Im sure you would!
My year in Shiga last year gave me an idea of where to live, but i havent really been north or west or south... I think gion is beautiful too, i love the traditional homes etc. Think i might go for a warm mansion / apartment over a cold traditional japanese home however... Unless i buy a massive kotatsu! |
I was raised in Kyoto. Ukyo-ku area is a nice place. Stay away from Kawaramachi or Gion. You can live there but you are looking at rent way above *almost 4 times more* then what they will pay. Live away from the center. Good living and quiet.

Thanks heaps for that i will have a look at ukyo-ku tonight on google earth.
Am looking for something around 60,000en a month. 1k. My company will arrange the appartment for me and guarantee it. They are also paying half of the rent. Sounds good |
