Tokyo Contemporary Art Galleries at Art Basel - 06-22-2007, 11:41 AM

This year, four Tokyo-based contemporary art galleries were selected to participate in the 38th Art Basel - considered by most to be the most important art fair in the world. The four Japanese galleries in Switzerland this year were ShugoArts, Tomio Koyama, SCAI the Bathhouse, and Gallery Koyanagi.

SCAI, at Basel for the sixth time, noticed that their buyers at Basel were mostly Europeans this year, rather than Americans as in the past, probably because of the weak dollar.

Tomio Koyama observed a big increase in the number of Japanese buyers and visitors attending this year. "There were five times as many Japanese people at the fair this year, which is an indication that there is a growing interest in the art market in Japan," he said.
