To say they are "one step away" is pretty much the same thing.
Hostesses do not sleep with their customers, they converse with them. Sure they entertain. So by your definition, singers, actresses, and models, are also "one step away from being whores."
I don't care if you don't like snack bars, but they exist for a reason, and are some of the only female conversation some Japanse men get. If it's not for you, totally fine. But no need to call them practical prostitutes.
