China's president expected to visit Japan on May 6

Japan and China are trying to arrange for Chinese President Hu Jintao to visit Japan from May 6.

The 2 governments originally tried to schedule President Hu's visit for April following an agreement at bilateral summit talks late last year, but they weren't able to coordinate their schedules.

President Hu is to visit Japan as a state guest and is scheduled to stay 5 or 6 days. He will meet Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and the Emperor.

Mr Hu and Mr Fukuda plan to confirm that the 2 countries will work to develop mutually beneficial relationships and raise their ties to a new level.

Attention is focused on how they will deal with a bilateral dispute over gas field development in the East China Sea, a poisoning incident involving Chinese-made dumplings in Japan, and China's crackdown on Tibetan protests.
