Same root meaning for both terms, which is why fag is such an insult to gay people. Originally a faggot was a bundle of sticks used for kindling a fire. In either case it's supposed to refer to something meant to set on fire.

There's also the double meaning for rubber. In U.K. an eraser, in the U.S. a condom.
