English is Easy - 03-01-2011, 04:10 PM

English is a very easy language. It is for a reason that it is currently the world's top language. Nowadays, everyone knows how to speak it fairly well or at least how to do so to a rather good extent. However, what is it that makes the language so easy to pick despite its enormous vocabulary?

Exposure to it is one of the main reasons for this cause. Almost all popular movies, songs, books, scientific journals, etc. that we see being published these days is in English or was originally. This implicitly forces us to live in an environment of unconscious immersion, which in turn helps us develop the skills necessary to learn the language easily.

English is a language of idiomatic expressions. "What the hell," "what up," "for show," etc. are just some of the most commonly used phrases which by themselves stand for literally nothing but have become so popular that it wouldn't be impressing to see them being included in respected dictionaries. It is due to this vivid imagery that these expressions are easily remembered and thus used.

English grammar is not as difficult as that of most, if not all, other languages. English verbs have at most three conjugations (e.g. run, ran, running) which are also very easy to figure out once learned the rules. Additionally, adjectives and adverbs can't get any easier given they almost never change from their dictionary forms.

English is the third most spoken language in the world in terms of population size with Spanish and Chinese immediately above it. This is a big accomplishment given English is only spoken in the U.S., UK and Australia whereas Spanish is spoken all throughout the Americas and Europe and the Chinese have a gigantic population.

Overall, with today's competitive economy and academic environments, not knowing English proves to be more of a handicap than anything else. So consider yourself an over-achiever for having been able to read this!
