Anime Movies Recommendations? - 06-05-2009, 04:36 PM

I don't usually watch anime at all, but like most people I did enjoy Totoro growing up and I watched Spirited Away, Princess M, Howl's MC and most of the other Ghibli films. I was wondering if anybody could give me any recommendations for some animated movies that are similar in style that I can pick up while I'm still in Japan?

Brave story? I haven't heard anything about it, but there were ads for that all over the place an year ago or so. Lots of ads for Ponyo DVD but that doesn't come out until July.

Also, do most anime dvd's in Japan not usually come with English subtitles? I know Spirited Away did when it came out on dvd, but other than that, I've really got no clue.

I don't think they usually come with english subtitles...not in Japan. I'm not really positive though.
Tekkon Kinkreet is my all-time favorite!

I'd say Millennium Actress is the best of the four. Satoshi Kon is a genius.

I'd also say:
5 Centimeters Per Second
Grave of the Fireflies is a given
Ninja Scroll is a pretty popular old one
Akira the god of all anime movies
Ghost in the Shell
Perfect Blue another Satoshi Kon flick
Tekkon Kinkreet blew my mind
And of course, anything by Miyazaki
Whisper of the Heart is a lesser known Ghibli film that I highly recommend

If you have to pick only a few I'd say:

Whisper of the Heart
Millennium Actress
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
and
Tekkon Kinkreet
(may not be the style your looking for, but it's very very good)

EDIT: Brave Story was a disappointment for me. I'd say buy the book instead.
