I can second Higurashi as being suspenseful. There wasn't a moment where I was curious on what happens next and pretty much the edge of my seat on the answer arcs.

I recomend Lucky star if you wanna laught, and watch some typical students but with one so very geek (otaku).
How about Mikami-ke? a story about three school girls sisters, living each day some interesting stuff
How about Futakoi It's about a Twin curse from a city in Japan. The boy meet again to his two closer ladies friends whose are a pair of twins. The curse says, the man must choose only one of them or both. . .

P.s: my today suggestions are based on my Spring topic: Typical school girls, slice of life. . .

I actually did watch Lucky Star.. it can get a little boring at times, but I did have a good laugh once in a while. It's definitely not an "exciting" anime, though. Funny yes, (in a cutesy kind of way..) exciting... no. Minami-ke looks like a fairly typical SoL comedy, and while that kind of series can be nice too, it's not really the kind I was after in this thread.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions, though.

Yesh Tokko!

My Life Sucks- The kids I babysit have drooled, ripped or drawn on all of the cards and put the cars with the little people in the microwave!

I have no Friends- The cats have scratched and destroyed all of the DVDs!

I always owe someone- In fact I put two os in it!

I always ruin my clothes with Bleach!- The show is so dom suspensful I spill my grape soda on them!

But . . .I'll live.

i would totally recommend:
Code Geass, Elfen Lied, Ef: A Tail of Memories, Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni

those are totally sick...

and there is this new one which is awesome but only a ova for now:
Denpateki na Kanojo

Lots of suspense and everything and you dont really get the history that easy
