Totoro - 05-26-2007, 07:12 PM

Hmm...Totoro is really trippy! It makes me laugh...i love trippy!

Out of Howels moving castle ans spirited away I liked Spirited away best.

But I also liked other Miyazaki films like castle in the sky, nausica valey of the winds, princess mononoke...etc...

CD of Spirited Away has been lying in my closet for a long time... one of these mornings...

Anyway, I watched Howl's M. Castle, it's an easy watching movie with great drawings. Its plot isnt that great but i really like the idea of hmm portal doors and that magician is drafted to army for both sides

I have seen both features; spirited away is the better of the two. so many little details: I like when the father is tearing up the mountain towards that gate, and they focus on his foot smashing down on the brakes; you can clearly see his foot vibrates as the antilock feature takes hold; who else would think to show such detail. miyasaki films are full of such moments.

I like spirited away more. Both are beautifull stories, but I like spirited away's story better. I don't care much for animation quality so that wasnt much of a factor for me. (they are both quite beautifully done btw!)

I thought Spirited Away was more interesting as I think it had a lot more to say, for example about modern society:

Ie. Chihiro leaves modern consumerist Japan and steps into a theme park where the buildings reflect a historical Japan and are populated by the neglected Shinto gods. The parents continue their greedy consumerist ways and are turned into swine yet Chihiro turns away from this way of life and as a result leaves the theme park a more mature and better person then when she went in.

I think Miyazaki's films always have a lot to say and I found Howl's moving castle a bit disappointing because although it was a good film I didn't find it interesting on a deeper level.

Finally watched the SpritedAway!

Quality of CD was bad, couldnt enjoy the animation but yes I agree its story is better than Howl's but also more weird

To enjoy the movie, i had to shut down my brain's questioning center

I think that what Totoro is about is that the children are in a very worried state, because their mother is ill. So what happens is that in their imaginations / play they escape from this harsh reality by introducing an element of fantasy. However I think this 'fantasy' has religious overtones to it. For example Totoro lives in a Shinto shrine (and may represent the spirit of the forest). I also remember a bit where they're waiting for the bus and there's a stone altar next to them. I think it's to show that they are being watched over and cared for in times of trouble. Though I may be reading too much into it.
