don't they say if you do something bad to someone then it will be returned to you three times three.

I don't believe we should go out of our way to be good and helpful with high expectations of rewards.

IN life there are many takers-- the more you do for them the more they take you for granted-- and just take you for a ride.

being kind is something we should do naturally but not expect rewards because of it.

Isn't that what we so called christians were taught-- give but not ask for any reward.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Karma a basic principal in Buddhism, not Christianity?....

ah well there you go-- should we really restrict it to one sort of religion.

Lets say that what goes around comes around.

we are all human beings so maybe we reap what we sow

I was simply quoting from the Bible--

Love thy neighbour as thyself etc

Pretty much. Although I think most religions have variations of 'karma' in some way or another, such as Christians belief in an eye for an eye, or in Wicca the idea what you do comes back at you threefold. . .

I have to ask though - mainly to the original poster (I think that's who it was anyway) - that there seems to be some negativity towards the concept of karma, mainly that some people do good things and still get screwed over. I always thought that karma wasn't what occurs over this life, but over the span of multiple past lives? So that if in your past life you did evil, you'd pay for it in lives to come. So even if it seems like life is unfair/unjust, that there's actually a reason for it after all?

well the old testament said "An eye for an eye" but christ preached

"Turn the other cheek"

If we always returned exactly what we received good or bad?

Isn't that what causes War.

I guess we get what we deserve. If we are soft and allow people to take advantage of us-- then its our own fault if we are walked all over.

There needs to be a balance really-- give and take--

It is better to give than to receive.

I do not know enough about buddhism but isn't that about behaving well and going through many incarnations until we might-- if ever-- reach Nirvana.

Not being even slightly religious or a believer in anything somewhat supernatural I don't have any belief in a concept of karma that's some sort of cosmic reward or punishment system.

It only makes sense though that if you treat others well and are compassionate and giving then you're more likely to have other people treat you similarly. And if you treat others badly and live a life of hate and anger then I wouldn't be expecting happiness to come your way too easily. No mystical or religious explanations required to work that out.

True. But nowhere is there a time frame set for karma to occur. And the negativity that naturally accompanies unrealized expectations factors into the karmic balance as well.

As for karma in relation to religions, I think there is some aspect of the basic premise in most, though most western religions separate it from the concept of reincarnation which is strongly tied to karma in some eastern beliefs.
