If you are talking about the Japanese style mattress, here is an example where
they use two FUTONs placed under the body.

In another case, they use urethane mattress on the TATAMI.

Many type of urethane mattresses are used in Japan.

I prefer innerspring mattresses. They are probably the most traditional type of mattress that you can find at the market. It uses steel coils in the support system. I can say that such mattress is comfortable to sleep on, especially in a hot climate.

I use a Tempur matress. These are way expensive in Japan, I got my from an expat who was going to work for Merryl Lynch in Tokyo, but had her assigment cancelled after she had shipped a new bed to Japan. I love it, and they come with a great warranty. I also like King Koil, one of our beds has a King Koil mattress, wonderfully comfortable.
