Japanese fact-finding mission to Myanmar - 05-25-2008, 04:54 AM

Japanese fact-finding mission to Myanmar

The Japanese government will dispatch a fact-finding mission to Myanmar with the intention of eventually sending a team of medical workers to the country.

On Saturday, Myanmar's military government requested international aid efforts. The 4-member mission includes a doctor, a Foreign Ministry official and a member of the Japan International Cooperation Agency. They will leave Japan on Sunday for Yangon, to study what kind of medical assistance is required in the devastated region.

Japan had decided to send 12.5 million dollars worth emergency aid to Myanmar, including tents and electric generators. However, Myanmar had previously refused Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura's repeated offers of humanitarian assistance.
