Guitar prices in Japan

I have been told by a mutual friend that the price of Guitars in Japan are well cheap, although they charge through the roof for a hard case to suit. I was looking at getting a Rickenbacker at a cost of about $3,000.00 Aus, he told me i could pick one up for the equivalent of $1,000.00 Aus plus prob $200 - $300 for a hard case.

He said head down to the Ochanomizu area in Tokyo.

Do any peeps know if there is any truth to this story? Sound s a bit to good to be true.

I have been to a few music stores in Japan, and I have never heard of the situation you describe. American guitars are, if anything, more expensive.

I don`t know all that much about guitars, and nothing about their prices, but here is a link for Rickenbacker models that seems to reflect the general prices around the net. (Discount)

If you tell me the model number, I`ll be happy to do a quick search for specific prices.

Ok thanks, I am looking at a standard R-330 in black or blue. They retail over here for $3,400.00 no including a hard case.

The cheapest I could find anywhere was in the 250,000yen range. So... It does look like they are cheaper than in Aus - but certainly not at the levels your friend suggested. But it appears that most places in Japan include the hard case.

How does the Aus. dollar compare to the yen?

Henbaka 06-24-2008 01:47 PM

250,000.00 JPY = 2,428.8637 AUD

(xe.com)

Seems like a nice deal to me if theyre 3,400 AUD over there.

Approx $2,500 with a hard case still sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
Thanks for your effort.
