Shopping clothes in Tokyo - 02-07-2011, 04:02 PM

Hi! As you may know Scandinavia is extremely expensive. I can hardly afford buying a decent pair of jeans here as brands like Levi's and Diesel cost between 150 and 200 US dollars a pair. I only own 4 pair of jeans now and 2 of them are too small. I also lack sweaters....

So I planned on saving some mopney and buying clothes, and I was wondering if Tokyo is any cheaper than Oslo when compared to the price examples below? I will hopefully be inTokyo this june...

Some price examples of clothing prices in Oslo:

1 pair of Levi's jeans - 150 dollars.

1 pair of Diesel jeans - 200 dollars.

3 pairs of boxer shorts - 25 dollars

A decent sweater - 80 dollars and upwards

1 pair of Nike or Adidas running shoes ( I like walking in them ) - 150 dollars and upwards....

OMG, in Serbia we can by 3 pairs of boxer shorts for only 5-10 euros, depending on quality But our monthly salaries are only 300-400 euros...

Tokyo is not the place to come for cheap clothes - especially with the crazy exchange rate of the Yen in the last year (or more).

But, if you want to buy Japanese fashion specifically, you are unlikely to find it cheaper anywhere else. Again, that's not to say Japanese fashion will be cheap - just cheaper than it costs in other places.

Scandinavia has some amazing fashion brands, BTW. Acne is great!

You should shop in the US. Levi's are around $40, Diesel jeans can be found for $80. I live in Tokyo, but I never buy clothes here, I shop when I go on holiday to America, or I buy from eBay stores on the Internet.

Last month in El Paso Texas I bought a pair of Wrangler 13MWZ jeans at Walmart for $19.97 (1600 yen) The same jeans at the Ikspiari shops at Maihama were 12,000 yen, or $148 at the current exchange rate.

I bought a pair of Prada loafers at Neiman Marcus in the US for $380. The exact same loafers in Omotesando were 72,000 yen. I also bought a pair of Zegna wingtips for $799, the same shoes at Takashimaya in Nihonbashi were 200,000 yen.

The only affordable clothes in Tokyo are Uniqlo, Jeansmate, and the no-name stuff at the lower end department stores. Since I am resolved not to buy anything made in China, these places are off limits to me.
