^(Don't go off-topic please) If you are a tourist staying for a short while, which you are, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just be polite like everybody has been saying. I am sure that plenty of people would like to help you out, as long as you seem interested, and involved with your surroundings. If you are friendly enough, you might meet someone who will be willing to help you out and give you tips once you get there!

Good luck, and have fun! (envious over here ) Make sure when you come back, you make a thread about it, and put up photos in the "Japan Trip Reports" section!

i think that when you do go to japan, they will know you are a visitor so basically just be yourself

I have no experince on this but i heard that if you just try your best and be yourself, they wont be rude. They know you are bad at it and your not as experienced as them. They'll understand. if that made any since.

My heart bleeds,
Look at you hiding,
all the things to endure me.
I need you here with me,
Breathing,
wanting you to believe me,
I see you in all of these faces,
Blush with shame,
when I think of you,
and your pale skin.
I need you here with me,
Breathing,
wanting you to believe me,
I sell my soul for you...

Foreigners, depends on whether you are a caucasian or not. Most caucasians are refered to as gaijin. Interestingly speaking, many asian skin people are not refered to as such. But whether you are, or aren't, if you are just visiting Japan for a short stay, then you don't have to be concern about all those bad reports on foreiners in Japan.
Just be a tourist, act as a tourist, and you might just find your visit to be a pleasant one. Good luck.
Hey, i'm off to Tokyo at the weekend for the first time and on my own. You statement got me curious because i aint caucasian. I'm black. is this a problem in Tokyo? a quick reply will be deeply appreciated as i leave next tomorrow for HK

Thanks
