Lightbulb Tokyo Fashion Trends - Spring 2007 - 04-17-2007, 01:08 PM

Here are a few Japanese fashion trends that have been noticed around Tokyo this spring. If you are in Tokyo, please feel free to add to the list or disagree with any of these:

1. Less knit dresses / sweater dresses. This winter in Tokyo so many Japanese gals (Gyaru) were wearing these really short knit dresses, especially in the Shibuya area. Many of the stores in 109 had them on display. In the last few weeks, I've seen a lot less of them around Tokyo. Not sure if the trend it dying or it's just the rain we've been having.

2. Bright red high heels. Shibuya and Shinjuku girls have been wearing bright red high heel shoes with outfits where they don't seem to match. It's been going on since the winter at least, but worth mentioning because it is a noticeable trend.

3. Very few Ganguro / Yamamba. This trend has been dying slowly for a long time, but even two years ago there were always a few around Shibuya. Now, you can walk around Shibuya every day for a week and not see even one. Is it finally dead or will they come back in the summer?

4. Loose schoolgirl socks. I haven't seen any for a long time, but in the last week I've seen at least six Japanese schoolgirls in Harajuku wearing them. Not sure if this means anything or if they are just being nostalgic. You still almost never see them anymore.

5. Platinum blonde hair on Japanese girls. In the last few weeks I've noticed more blonde hair in Shibuya. Is it a trend or just a few girls easy to notice? Should have a better idea in a few months.

6. Leopard print leggings. Like the blonde Japanese girls, this is just something I've noticed around Shibuya in the last few weeks. It may be the beginning of a trend or maybe just a few girls who are easy to notice.

7. Bare midriff by Japanese girls. As the summer approaches, you can see a lot more Japanese girls showing off their stomachs. Low waisted pants or skirts and short shirts are probably going to be big this year. That's a fashion that's popular around the world, so I'm not sure it qualifies as a Japanese fashion trend.

8. Colored contacts. Japanese girls seem to love them, but I'm not sure if it's really a trend or just a normal part of Japanese fashion now.

Next time, I will try to include pictures to illustrate each of the fashion trends.

If you have noticed any fashion trends around Tokyo or other parts of Japan, please post them here too!

^^You mean you don't wanna dress like mentioned?

But seriously, why does fashion neglect men so much?

A couple of more Spring 2007 Japanese / Tokyo fashion comments:

1. The brightly colored BAPE style jackets have been really popular with Japanese guys around Shibuya and central Tokyo this winter and spring. They are sort of a hip-hop style, I guess. These are the type of jackets I mean:

Most of them people are wearing around Tokyo don't say "BAPE" on them and they are probably from various fashion brands, but they all have the BAPE colored pattern style.

2. High Top Converse All Stars are always in fashion in Tokyo, but recently I have noticed more of the style where girls are wearing them with the high tops rolled down. Not a big trend, but noticeable.
