Why would she be surprised? Starbucks and MacDonalds are EVERYWHERE.

KFC is present, but not very popular (until Christmas)

Burger King just made its big come-back into Japan in Tokyo last year.

Mr. Donuts.

Krispy Kreme

Basically if its within the top 10 or so recognized food-chains, it most likely has at least one branch in Japan.

In New Zealand we call it "Mackers".

As in:-

A: "I feel like some Mackers"
B: "Why? Mackers is shit and makes you fat"
A: "Because I'm a fat loser who can't eat properly and has no soul. That's why I eat Mackers"
B: "True"

I have to mention why nicknames have been necessary for 'McDonald's' in Japan.

While it's only a 3-syllable word to all of you English speakers, it becomes a 6-syllable one when uttered within the Japanese sound system, which is Ma-ku-do-na-ru-do. As you can imagine, that is way too long a name to call a burger joint with all the time.

So the Kanto people shortened it to Makku, and the Kansai folks created Makudo. Why the difference? Well, if you speak enough Japanese ,you will know that each nickname can blend in better with its "mother" dialect. I know Makku sounds pretty curt to the Kansai ear, and Makudo sounds very foreign in Tokyo with the way it's pronounced in Kansai with the accent on the 'ku'.

mak-ku-do-na-ru ...should suffice >.>''
the 'do' is totally unnecessary as it doesn't even follow the original pronunciation of Mckey-D's

In the shadows beneath the trees he waits.
In the darkness under the moon he plots
In the silence of the night he kills.

Around where I live, we call it Micky-D's (or... whichever way you spell it...).

The staff of the McDonalds I went to, when I was in Japan, spoke English.
I was surprised at the time - it saved my day.
