inner strength and perseverance kanji help - 05-07-2008, 07:22 PM

Hello,

I am interested in learning how to combine two phrases in Kanji characters.

The first phrase is Kiryoku (inner strength).

The second phrase is Nin tai (perseverance).

I would like it to symbolize "train inner strength to persevere." By "inner strength" I am referring to self-discipline and self-control. So please correct me if I'm not using the right terminology. I am interested in writing the phrase vertically. I am limited on space so I would like to use as few characters as possible.

Any help, thoughts or comments is appreciated.

Thanks for you help James!

Learning how to say it would be great, but for now I am just interested in writting it correctly. Can I write the Kanji characters vertically and it still have the same meaning?

It is not for a tattoo. I have a japanese style garden and in the process of building a torii gate for it. I would like to post this phrase at the top of the gate when it is complete.

In that case, I would keep it simple and use the the kanji as they are there.

@MMM: I agree with keeping it simple. Just want to make sure the order is correct. If I wanted to write it vertically, can I write it as:

耐

Is a space necessary or can it I write it all together like I have?

忍耐 【にんたい】 (n,vs) endurance; perseverance; patience; (P); EP
気力 【きりょく】 (n) willpower; energy; vitality; (P); EP

You probably want to switch them...and I think a native speaker would answer your second question better.
