Question Help me translate this tenugui! - 06-22-2009, 09:08 PM

I received this tenugui from a friend but I cannot read it! While I can recognize some characters, the style of writing combined with my lack of kanji recognition make it very hard to translate. Any help is appreciated!

Makes no sense to me

???ふさたる
我八
れにさ
小ろきて
うたみ?
くちゅと
ぬえおふ

自蓮

Can you scan at a higher resolution? There are a few characters that I may have gotten wrong because it's too small. Namely the ゅ and さ.

柳原白蓮:やなぎはら びゃくれん;Yanagihara, Byakuren (family name first) is a poetry and woman of love affair.

The picture includes one of her tanka.

小鳥きてかたみにくちをふくみあふ みちあふれたるよ るのしずけさ

For some reason, further and latter parts are replaced.

The meaning is that small birds kissed each other in the silence of the night.

Language makes Culture and Culture makes Language.

みちあふれたる
夜の
しずけさ

小鳥きて
かたみに
くちを
ふくみあふ

白蓮

This is a well-known Tanka by 柳原白蓮. I wish I knew why this calligrapher had to flip the first and last halves. With the help of a dictionary, you should be able to translate it by yourself. Trust no one else's translation.... Especially mine!
________

Haiku syllables > 5-7-5
Tanka syllables > 5-7-5-7-7

EDIT: Never mind. Someone beat me to it.

Wow. Thanks everyone! I'll need to take a look at everyone's response later this afternoon and will also try to update with a higher res picture. In case anyone was wondering ... the tenugui is from the store Fujiya in Asakusa, Tokyo.
