What does this say?! - 08-14-2009, 07:52 PM

My grandfather acquired this gun from a port merchant during WWII and we've wondered for years what the writing on the butt says. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

生六三

I am not sure how the first character is being used here...must be a military usage, but the second two characters are 6 and 3. Could be a unit number, maybe.

I'm probably wrong, but I'm going to take a guess and say that it doesn't really mean anything in Japanese >_>

The first character is 生 which means a number of different things and the following two are 六 and 三 which are six and three, but not sixty three.

I ran a google search and it didn't turn up anything except on Chinese sites. Wait for a native speaker or someone who is more knowledgeable than me though.

Edit: Whoops, MMM beat me =(
