Japanese time expression? (YYYY/MM/DD)

How to express dates in Japanese? I tried googling it but there are too many results and I was confused. I wonder if I got it correctly.

二チ八年一月六日　: 2008/ 01/ 07.

Can we add weekday to a date expression? Something like: 2009/ 04/08 Monday?

2009年8月15日(土曜日）　または　（土） is the most common pattern for writing the (Gregorian calendar) date.
