What do you think of this name? - 08-20-2009, 07:51 AM

For our Japanese class, we have to come up with a Japanese name. I'm having a hard time deciding, so tell me what you think Some of these are made up - or not made up, just thought up.

Oh, and can you tell me of any other names that are kind of like these.

Umi (海雅)
Momo (桃)
Gekka (月花)
Seika (星花) or (星海)
Yuumi (優海)

Can you also tell me if some of these don't sound right or the kanji don't work like that? I'm not too good with names... >.>

I am not of fan of teachers that require you to take on a different name as you learn their language.

Ask what your name is in katakana. That's your name.

She doesn't require we do, it's just an option and it sounded fun
For the past 2 years I've been using my name in katakana, just wanted to change it up a bit for the new school year~

While you might be thinking that "Gekka" is a pretty name because the kanji you have chosen mean "moon flower", it doesn't sound anything like a Japanese girl's name, and the word "gekka" with different kanji has several different meanings- one of them is "aggravation", so not really a nice-sounding name.

Seika also sounds a bit odd, and Umi isn't usually a name although it's not impossible.

Momo and Yumi are ordinary names here that lots of girls have.

Someone gave you a list with mostly more normal Japanese names, but one of them is Toru (or Tohru), which is very much a guy's name! Another one was "Toonami", which I haven't come across before, but it sounds more like a guy's name, or an anime name which you will never find a real person with.

I really wouldn't advise trying to make up your own name as you risk ending up with something which has a completely different and perhaps embarrassing meaning in Japanese.

Go with names that already exist.

I did this when I was in Spanish class . I chose Victor. Accent and everything!

In any case, just have fun with it! It's nothing that's going to follow you around and it's certainly not serious. You can pick a common name or just something that sounds cool to you. Japanese also adds the interesting aspect where you get to choose whatever kanji you want to "spell" out your name (don't know if you all will take it to that level).

I forget what name I had in my Spanish class

A friend was Señor Suerte, though!
