Question concerning two-kanji words - 09-03-2009, 08:27 PM

I've noticed certain discrepancies between two dictionaries I have where one add an extra hiragana into a two-kanji word and the other leaves it out.

For example:
取っ手 vs 取手
引き出し vs 引出し

Basically I'm just wondering if there's any difference or is there one that's better to use or not?

Both 引き出し and 引出し would be correct by anyone's standard, but more careful writers would avoid 取手 to mean 取っ手 because there's a city named 取手 and it's pronounced とり.

Thanks for that. I'll use the extra hiragana versions then, so as to avoid confusion.
