So, next question. The author was asked to write a 風景論, but he recalled a memory from Japan's day of surrender, and decided to write a little about that (少し書いたぐらいでは、永年かくしていたことを、そ でしゃべったことにはならない気もするので、この機 にそのことを書いておく). The context is the author talking about 1945年8月15日, and how some people call it 「日本の一番長い日」, others call it 「日本の一番短い日」, 悲しい日, etc. My question is about this sentence in particular: I'm parsing the sentence as: 誰もが話せば = If everyone speaks, ながい短いの差はあっても even if there's a difference between long and short 一篇の掌篇ぐらいになりそうな経験は an experience amounting to one short piece of writing もちあわせていようと思う。 [??] is wanting/thinking/planning to have So I see 一篇の掌篇ぐらいになりそうな経験はもちあわせていよ うと思う as something like the author wants everyone to share his experience, which amounts to just about one short story in length. Right? The first half confuses me even more. If everyone speaks, even if there's a difference between "long" and "short"? I don't understand! Is there an idiom in there I am missing?「誰もが話せば」の意味は何でしょうか。 As a side note, the word リヤカー keeps showing up in the story, and I didn't fully understand what this was until I, serendipitously, watched 火垂るの墓 two days ago. |

It means "if (they were) willing to speak up, everyone (would have an experience that ~~~)". 「誰もが持ち合わせている」 is the core of the entire sentence. Quote:

Everyone has something. That something is an experience. If you can somehow get these people to tell their stories of their experiences, the stories would come in varied lengths. Try reading the sentence with short pauses at the slashes below. |
Well, it's been a few months since my last question! I recently was able to visit a Japanese bookstore near Chicago and bought an essay book by Murakami! I'm now reading through a short essay called "CAN YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?" and translating it to English.
Now I'm stuck at this sentence: Quote:
It seems as though, for many people in society, ~ 外国語会話というのを後天的に身につけることのできる 純粋な技術として as a genuine skill of being able to acquire foreign language conversation [ability after birth/a posteriori] 捉えて perceive/grasp 考えている。 consider/think about But I can't figure out how to incorporate the 捉えて考えている into the rest of my translation to fit it together. Help? Thanks! |

最近、linkedinのプロフィールを翻訳することにしました 「I manage the legal affairs of a management and technology consulting firm.」
Quote:

Quote:
