and to make it worse its not even japanese!

in my opinion akira is one of the greatest animes ever greated and a non japanese live action is totally going to ruin the whole idea of what the film is about!

i heard about this a little while ago.it's one of a number hollywood anime adaptations, you're right they should just leave this and the other classics (dragonball, neon genesis) alone.the only one i have any hope for is Steven Spielberg's version of The Ghost In The Shell, but only because it's not going to be a direct remake but a new story set in the same world

Yeah, each kind of art has its specific characteristics, when you try to put it in another background it will lose some of its enchant. I think the western movies, specially those of Hollywood, have nothing to do with the anime and the manga. The American producers always try to make the things the more Americanised possible and don't respect the essence of the work, they'll use American actors and even put the Stars & Stripes on it.
Of course when they work on their own territory they can make master-pieces, because each one has your own space and the manga and anime are the authorities of the Japanese, but they keep insisting in borrow the franchise...
