Well, if you found ramen that is '6 yen' then either you mean 600 yen, or that's some free-ass ramen.

I did fine with $20 a day- and I ate pretty well... but the candy and the vending machines is what makes all your money dissappear! Japan is a coin-based society, I come to find out- and just because you have a pocket full of change you assume you can just spend it on worthless crap... it goes fast!

The milk price sounds right. Ramen at that price would be shocking. I don`t think I`ve ever seen any less than 100 something.

I dont see how ppl keep going on how japan is expensive when the prices are actually cheaper than here where i live, its a tourist island and we pay - the residents - tourist prices for food unless you go 30+ minutes out of you way to the big supermarkets.

120 yen, up in my local shop its 170+ yen for standard milk not fresh but the kind that has like a 2 year life span on it and i live in village/town with only 5 thousand ppl so the supermarkets arent as bad as those in other parts of the island.

Stuff is expensive any wer you go unless you got an amazing salary you make a budget for daily allowances and you keep to it its easy.

When people refer to Japan being expensive, it`s not necessarily food costs they are referring to. In fact, I`d say that you can eat very cheaply in Japan with a minimum of effort.

It`s the other costs of living that hurt.

Like the cost of rent (in Tokyo the average is something like 70,000 for a tiny one room). The cost of utilities - our electric bill is something like 12,000/month even though we don`t use all that much. Same for gas. Phone costs an arm and a leg to set up most of the time, etc etc. Not to mention that public transportation costs add up... And furniture, appliances, etc are not exactly cheap.

You need to remember that a yen is not equivalent to a dollar, a pound, or a euro, it's equivalent to a penny or pence. So 120 yen is like saying $1.20. 600 yen is like saying $6. But 6 yen is like saying $.06 (6 cents).
