Thinking of Moving to Japan - 08-03-2009, 01:26 AM

I'm looking for any advice on living and teaching english in Japan. I've been hearing conflicting stories on making money and finding jobs. Is any particular coarse that needs to be taken? Are there many jobs to be had? Can money be made? I guess, I'm looking for all and any info to dropping my life here and moving there for a year or so. Any ideas?

Well, some people are very lucky to get into a eikaiwa company. My friend had his ECC interview in Toronto (Canada) and got barely approved.

It's very hard to get into JET.

Ha. Yes, indeed.

Anyways, I don't think moving to Japan is something you really just do. I think it's something you try to do.

Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't workout.

I never understood it. Apart from Tokyo being the mecca for Otaku and weeaboos, it hasn't got much the the other major Japanese metropolises... metropolii? ...cities... have.

Although if everyone wants to go to Tokyo, it takes the heat off for those of us legitimately job hunting in Kansai. Stay out!

I definitely want to visit Japan one day. I know it is a totally different world in the East. I'd love to experience this for a week or so. When I EVENTUALLY learn Japanese and am fluent enough to visit, I will definitely be doing so. It's just one of those things I have to do before I die.

Check my bucket list. It's on there somewhere.

If you want to see the East and a bit of real Japan Tokyo's probably the last place in Japan you want to go. It's just a big ol' melting pot city with, and I'm sorry to say this, really a lot of similarities to just about every other big ol' melting pot city in the world. Go to somewhere smaller. Heck, Japan's not even anything like the rest of Asia at all. If you really really want a "totally different world" go to the Mekong delta or somewhere where you can really have a "Toto we're not in kansas" moment.

And if it's important enough to be on your bucket list, spend more than 7 days doing it or it's not really worth the long-haul flight.
