planning on doing exchange program? - 10-06-2009, 01:22 AM

In about 2 and half years I hope to do the yfu usa exchange program to japan. I want to stay for a school year but its about 10k. My mom said I could probably earn that in the amount of time. by getting a job. Do you guys think its worth it?

its always worth working and saving money.

even if in 2 years you decide not to go to japan, as 2.5 years is a long time, and many things can change,..... you'll then be sitting on 10K in savings.

I'm guessing you live at home right? probably eat at home too?

if so then now is the best time to be working and saving money.

its one of the most important lessons to learn in life, and whatever you do in 2.5 years, it never hurts to have a nice fat wad stashed away somewhere.

$10,000 is just for tuition right? Because with housing, meals, transportation, books, entertainment, etc. for a year it should be more like $25,000~$30,000. Going to school in Japan as an exchange student can get expensive and is only really worth it if you can get some scholarships to help out.

Well the housing and food is provided by the host family. and as for the books, do i really have to buy them?

I don't know how it's in the USA, but here in the Netherlands you have to pay like 7k (euros). The things that aren't inclusive are:
Visa, pocket money, school trip, insurance, school uniform & money to sign up for the exchange(and probably some other things...)

But if you go with AFS, it's a bit cheaper, the exchange is 11 months & the things not inclusive are: pocket money, school uniform & visum

There is one more difference between YFU & AFS, one starts in January (YFU), the other in August (AFS)..

I want to go on an exchange too, I already have a job, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make it... My aunt & uncle already said they would sponsor me (5k)
but my parents want me to go
